Enjoy time in wonderful Korea, now and always.īernard Rowan ( is associate provost for contract administration and academic services and professor of political science at Chicago State University. Whether in Korea for business, a conference, or to visit my family and friends, I've celebrated the beauty, customs, and wonderful experiences that await Koreans and foreigners every day. As I perpetuate the memory of my autumns in Korea, I think of these simple experiences. The artist, Bruegel, put himself in many of his paintings, and he took the approach of presenting some of his famous artworks as a participant in events of universal significance. I'm grateful for the times of stillness and the peace they bring to mind and body even now. I'm remembering the coming of Autumn in Korea. There is much benefit in tarrying awhile amid these idyllic places. Whether Buddhist or not, I've never failed to find Korea's temples and other quiet spaces ideal for self-reflection. What a wonderful place! The Fall leaves give the temple and mountains an even more serene quality. I climbed the hill to Sokguram and toured Bulguk temple in Fall, as part of a tour of Gyeongju. While many trek to the beaches in summer, it's a great destination for Fall travel, including away from the city. I'm thinking of roads and climbs I traveled, longing to be there. There are many ways to relax and let the pressures of a busy world lessen. Each is a great way to rest from the "hurry hurry culture." Try a sauna or other water therapy in Korea.

Even in the city, try some roasted chestnuts or other snacks. There are many places to experience a gentle autumn evening this time of year. I'd go to the area, perhaps to enjoy a good meal at a family restaurant or to drink and enjoy the moonlight on the river. One of my good friends spent much time in and around Yangsuri, where the North and South Han Rivers join. I'm grateful for the blessing of plenty in the land. I'm remembering the coming of autumn in Korea.
AUTUMN VS FALL COMIC FULL
Grapes, delicious, sweet, and full of flavor, are also good now.
AUTUMN VS FALL COMIC SKIN
Don't stop with apples though, as Korean pears, be, skin and all, are just wonderful this time of year. The same goes for visiting Korean fruit stands or family grocers, easily identified and all-over. Buying from street-side sellers is a good experience. The garden variety is a Fuji, I think, and typically large. As a boy, I'd eat the entire apple it seemed ― stem, seed husks, seeds and all! I enjoy all kinds of apples. I'm remembering the coming of Autumn in Korea.Īpples, I just love them. I've heard that gotgam also compose a liqueur, which one day I hope to try. Perhaps a glass of "makgeolli" or "dongdongju" would go well, or some tea, again made from "gotgam" or dried persimmon. That and "yakgwa" wheat cakes just made an imprint on my memory for Fall. That and the dried persimmons Koreans refer to as "gotgam." This chewy and sweet confection, made from persimmons, tastes good anytime of the year.

But the gentle breeze and inviting stroll through Insa-dong and other kinds of places made the days seem simply delightful. Often, traditional rites and ceremonies occurred, with locals and tourists crowding in alike to see them. I saw so many wonderful sights at Gyeongbok Palace, Biwon, Changdeok Palace, and Unhyeon Palace. When I lived in Songpa-gu, I enjoyed going to Seoul's parks and walking on the crunchy leaves. In all of that, I'm thinking of dried persimmons, apples, Yangsuri, and Bulguk Temple. Fall remains a welcome respite from the tumult of weather crises in late summer. The Northern Hemisphere continues to devolve into a subtropical zone, absent climate policies on a global scale.

I remember my visits and sabbatical there and the lovely season.

As we enter the latter half of September, I hope fall is coming soon to Korea.
